Sow Seeds Indoors

Not grown from seed. Buy certified virus-free bare-root or container-grown bushes.

Outdoors

Plant bare-root bushes from November to March. Choose a sheltered, sunny position with moist but well-drained soil.

Harvest

Pick whole trusses when all the berries in the cluster are dark and ripe, usually in July and August.

How to Sow

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot — blackcurrants flower early so frost pockets should be avoided
  • Dig a generous hole and mix in lots of well-rotted manure or compost
  • Plant 5cm deeper than the nursery soil mark to encourage strong basal shoots
  • Space bushes 1.5m apart
  • Cut all stems back to one or two buds above soil level after planting

Plant Care

  • Mulch generously each spring with well-rotted compost or manure
  • Water well in dry weather, especially when fruit is developing
  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser in early spring
  • Prune in winter — remove about a third of the oldest wood each year, cutting to the base
  • Net against birds as the fruit begins to ripen

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Blackcurrants are packed with vitamin C — more than oranges weight for weight!
  • The variety 'Ben Lomond' is compact and reliable, perfect for smaller plots
  • Freeze excess berries on trays then bag them — they make brilliant smoothies and cordials all year round
