Sow Seeds Indoors

Blueberries are best bought as container-grown plants rather than grown from seed.

Outdoors

Plant container-grown bushes from October to March. They must have acidic (ericaceous) soil or compost.

Harvest

Pick when berries are deep blue with a dusty bloom. They ripen over several weeks from July to September.

How to Sow

  • Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH of 4.0–5.5
  • If your soil isn't acidic, grow in large pots (40cm+) with ericaceous compost
  • Plant at the same depth they were in the pot
  • Space bushes 1.5m apart if planting more than one
  • Water in well using rainwater, not tap water (which is often alkaline)

Plant Care

  • Always water with rainwater — set up a water butt if you haven't already
  • Feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser
  • Net bushes when fruit starts to colour to protect from birds
  • Prune in late winter — remove any dead or weak wood and the oldest stems to encourage new growth
  • Mulch with pine needles or bark to maintain soil acidity

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Grow at least two different varieties for better pollination and bigger yields
  • Blueberries are one of the best fruits for containers — they look great on a patio
  • Patience pays off: bushes won't produce much fruit in the first couple of years, but will crop heavily once established
