Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow indoors in March in small pots. Dill dislikes root disturbance so sow where it's to grow or use modules.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from April to July. Successional sowing every 3-4 weeks extends the season.

Harvest

Snip leaves from about 8 weeks after sowing. Harvest seeds when they turn brown. Use feathery leaves fresh — they don't store well.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds thinly, 0.5cm deep in rows 30cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 15cm apart
  • Choose a sheltered, sunny spot — tall dill stems blow over in wind
  • Don't transplant — dill bolts when its roots are disturbed
  • Sow successionally every 3-4 weeks as dill runs to seed quickly

Plant Care

  • Water regularly to slow bolting, especially in dry weather
  • Stake or support tall plants in exposed positions
  • Allow some plants to flower and set seed — they'll self-sow for free plants next year
  • Don't grow near fennel as they can cross-pollinate
  • Pick leaves regularly to delay flowering

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Dill is essential in Scandinavian and British fish cookery — perfect with salmon, gravlax, and new potatoes
  • Let a few plants self-seed and you'll have volunteer dill popping up for years — it's a wonderful self-sustaining herb
  • Both the feathery leaves and the seeds are used in cooking — the seeds have a stronger, almost anise flavour
