Sow Seeds Indoors

Not typically grown from seed in the UK. Buy container-grown plants of hardy varieties like 'Brown Turkey'.

Outdoors

Plant in spring (April/May) against a warm, south-facing wall. Restrict roots using a container or lined pit for best fruiting.

Harvest

Pick when fruit droops on the stalk, feels soft, and shows slight splits in the skin. Ripe figs come away easily when lifted.

How to Sow

  • Choose the warmest, most sheltered spot you have — ideally a south-facing wall
  • Restrict the roots by planting in a large container or a lined pit (60cm x 60cm) to encourage fruiting over leaf growth
  • Use well-drained soil mixed with rubble at the base for drainage
  • Plant at the same depth as the container
  • Water in well

Plant Care

  • Water regularly during summer, especially container-grown plants
  • Feed every two weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser once fruit starts to form
  • In autumn, remove any figs larger than a pea — only embryo figs the size of a pea will survive winter to fruit next year
  • Protect from hard frosts with fleece or straw in winter
  • Prune in spring to maintain shape and remove any frost-damaged growth

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Figs are surprisingly hardy in the south of England — 'Brown Turkey' is the most reliable variety
  • Container growing is brilliant for figs — it naturally restricts roots and you can move them to shelter in harsh winters
  • Be patient: it takes two seasons for a fig to develop — tiny embryo figs form in autumn, overwinter, and ripen the following summer
