Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow in modules indoors from February for early crops.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to September. Later sowings (August-September) produce the best crops as they bolt less.

Harvest

Pick baby leaves from 3 weeks, or full-size leaves from 6-8 weeks. Cut-and-come-again for multiple harvests from one sowing.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 1cm deep in rows 15cm apart for baby leaf, 30cm for full size
  • Thin as needed or grow as a cut-and-come-again crop
  • Choose any spot — mustard greens are very adaptable
  • Sow in late summer (August-September) for the best results with less bolting
  • Can be grown in containers, window boxes, and grow bags

Plant Care

  • Water regularly to keep growth fast and leaves tender
  • Provide shade in summer to reduce bolting
  • Flea beetle can be a problem — cover with fine mesh
  • Pick outer leaves regularly to keep plants producing
  • Sow successionally for a continuous supply

AllotMe’s Tips

  • 'Red Giant' is the most popular variety — beautiful red-veined leaves with a spicy wasabi-like kick
  • Mustard greens add fantastic flavour to salads, stir-fries, and sandwiches — baby leaves are milder, mature leaves are fiery
  • Incredibly fast-growing — you can go from seed to salad in under a month. Great for impatient gardeners!
