Sow Seeds Indoors

Raspberries are not typically grown from seed. Buy bare-root canes for planting in the dormant season.

Outdoors

Plant bare-root canes from November to March while dormant. Container-grown plants can go in any time.

Harvest

Pick when berries are richly coloured and pull away easily from the plug. Summer varieties fruit June to August, autumn varieties from August to October.

How to Sow

  • Dig a trench and add well-rotted manure or compost to the bottom
  • Space canes 40-50cm apart in rows 1.8m apart
  • Plant so the soil mark on the cane is at ground level
  • Cut summer-fruiting canes back to 25cm after planting
  • Set up a post-and-wire support system for the canes to grow along

Plant Care

  • Tie in new canes as they grow during summer
  • Water well during dry periods, especially when fruit is forming
  • Mulch annually with well-rotted compost in spring
  • For summer varieties, cut fruited canes to ground level after harvest and tie in new growth
  • For autumn varieties, cut all canes to ground level in February

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Autumn-fruiting varieties like 'Autumn Bliss' are the easiest to manage — you just chop everything down in February
  • Raspberries spread by underground runners, so consider a root barrier if space is tight
  • Freeze any glut on baking trays before bagging — they keep for months
