Sow Seeds Indoors

Can be grown from seed sown indoors in March, but buying crowns is far quicker and more reliable.

Outdoors

Plant crowns from November to March while dormant. Choose an open, sunny site with deep, well-drained soil.

Harvest

Pull (don't cut) stalks from April to June when they're 30cm long. Twist and pull from the base. Never harvest more than half the stalks at once.

How to Sow

  • Choose an open, sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil
  • Dig a large hole and add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost
  • Plant the crown so the bud is just visible at soil level
  • Space crowns at least 90cm apart
  • Water in well and mulch thickly around the plant

Plant Care

  • Mulch generously with well-rotted manure or compost each winter
  • Water during dry spells in the growing season
  • Remove any flower stalks that appear — they divert energy from the stems
  • Do not harvest in the first year to let the plant establish itself
  • Force early tender stalks in January by covering with a bucket or forcing pot

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Rhubarb is practically indestructible once established and will crop for 10+ years
  • Only eat the stalks — the leaves are poisonous but make a great addition to the compost heap
  • 'Timperley Early' is the best variety for early forced stems; 'Victoria' is a reliable main crop
