Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow indoors from February to March in modules or small pots.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to July. Will grow in sun or partial shade in most soils. Self-seeds freely.

Harvest

Pick young, tender leaves from April onwards. Regular harvesting encourages fresh growth. Remove flower stems to prolong leaf production.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 20cm apart
  • Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with reasonably moist soil
  • French sorrel (Rumex scutatus) has the best flavour; common sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is more vigorous
  • Or buy a single plant and divide it as it grows

Plant Care

  • Water in dry weather to keep leaves tender and prevent bolting
  • Remove flower stems as they appear to prolong leaf production
  • Cut the whole plant back if it becomes tired-looking — it quickly regrows
  • Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring
  • Mulch around plants in spring to conserve moisture

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Sorrel has a unique lemony, tangy flavour that's wonderful in soups, sauces, and salads
  • Classic French sorrel soup takes just 20 minutes and is one of the finest spring dishes you can make
  • A perennial that comes back every year — plant once and harvest for years. It's one of the first edible leaves of spring
