Sow Seeds Indoors

Can be sown in modules indoors from February for an early crop.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to September for a nearly year-round harvest. Successional sowing every 3-4 weeks works best.

Harvest

Pull when they reach pencil thickness, usually 8-12 weeks after sowing. Use before the bulb starts to swell significantly.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds thinly, 1cm deep in rows 10cm apart
  • No need to thin — spring onions grow well close together
  • Choose any reasonably fertile, well-drained spot
  • Sow every 3-4 weeks from March to September for continuous supply
  • Can also be grown thickly in pots and containers

Plant Care

  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged
  • Weed regularly as spring onions don't compete well with weeds
  • No feeding necessary if soil has been previously well composted
  • Cover autumn sowings with cloches or fleece for winter harvesting
  • Watch for onion fly — cover with fine mesh as a preventative

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Spring onions are one of the easiest and quickest crops — perfect for filling gaps between slower-growing veg
  • 'White Lisbon' is the classic reliable variety; 'Ishikura' gives longer, straight stems without bulbing
  • Sow a batch under cover in September/October for fresh spring onions through winter
