Sow Seeds Indoors

Not usually started indoors. Direct sow outdoors from late spring.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from late May to mid-June. Swede needs a long growing season.

Harvest

Harvest from October onwards when roots are roughly the size of a small football. Can be left in the ground over winter and lifted as needed.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 2cm deep in rows 38cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 23cm apart when large enough to handle
  • Choose an open, sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil
  • Avoid freshly manured ground which causes forking
  • Water the drill well before sowing

Plant Care

  • Keep plants watered during dry spells to prevent the roots becoming woody
  • Weed regularly while young
  • Cover with fine mesh to protect from cabbage root fly and flea beetle
  • Swede is a slow grower — be patient through summer
  • Earth up slightly if roots push above soil level

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Swede is one of the hardiest root vegetables — it actually tastes better after a frost, which converts starches to sugar
  • 'Invitation' and 'Marian' are reliable varieties with good resistance to clubroot and mildew
  • Mash swede with butter and black pepper for a classic British side dish — 'neeps' with haggis for Burns Night!
