Sow Seeds Indoors

Not typically grown from seed. Buy bare-root or container-grown plants.

Outdoors

Plant bare-root canes from November to March, or container plants any time. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot.

Harvest

Pick when berries are fully black, plump, and pull away easily. Ripe fruit should be soft and sweet.

How to Sow

  • Choose a spot with well-drained soil, full sun or partial shade
  • Dig a hole large enough for the root ball and mix in compost
  • Space plants 3-4m apart (they spread vigorously)
  • Plant at the same depth as the nursery pot
  • Set up a system of horizontal wires on posts or a fence for training

Plant Care

  • Tie in new canes to your wire supports as they grow
  • Water well during dry spells, especially in the first year
  • Mulch around the base with well-rotted compost each spring
  • After fruiting, cut the old canes that produced fruit down to ground level
  • Tie in the new season's canes which will fruit the following year

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Thornless varieties like 'Loch Ness' make picking much more pleasant!
  • Blackberries are incredibly vigorous — keep on top of pruning or they'll take over
  • Wild blackberries are everywhere in the UK from August — great for foraging on walks too
