Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow seeds on the surface of compost indoors from February to March. They need light to germinate and temperatures of 15-18°C.

Outdoors

Plant out from late May once plants are well-established with several true leaves. Don't plant too deep.

Harvest

Harvest from October onwards. Can be left in the ground over winter and lifted as needed. Protect crowns with straw in hard frosts.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost — do not cover as they need light to germinate
  • Keep at 15-18°C and be patient — germination can take 2-3 weeks
  • Prick out into individual pots when large enough to handle
  • Grow on in cool conditions and harden off before planting out
  • Space plants 30cm apart in rows 40cm apart in rich, moist soil

Plant Care

  • Water consistently throughout the growing season — celeriac hates drying out
  • Mulch well to conserve moisture
  • Remove lower leaves as they yellow to expose the developing root
  • Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser
  • In autumn, earth up around the crowns and protect from hard frosts with straw or fleece

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Celeriac has a long growing season (6+ months) so start early — but it rewards patience with an incredibly versatile winter vegetable
  • 'Monarch' is the best variety for UK growing — smoother skin and reliable
  • Celeriac remoulade (grated raw with mustard mayo) is a classic French dish that's become a UK deli staple
