Sow Seeds Indoors

Not grown from seed. Buy bare-root or container-grown bushes from a nursery.

Outdoors

Plant bare-root bushes from November to March while dormant. Container plants can go in any time.

Harvest

Pick green gooseberries from late May for cooking. Leave until July for sweeter dessert berries that are fully ripe.

How to Sow

  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with good air circulation
  • Dig in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost before planting
  • Space bushes 1.2-1.5m apart
  • Plant at the same depth as the pot or nursery mark
  • Firm in well and water thoroughly

Plant Care

  • Mulch in spring with compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds
  • Water during dry periods, especially when fruit is swelling
  • Prune in winter to an open goblet shape — remove crossing and congested branches
  • Net against birds and watch for sawfly caterpillars which can strip leaves quickly
  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Gooseberries are a brilliant British fruit that's making a comeback — perfect for crumbles, jams, and fools
  • They grow really well as cordons if you're short on space — train against a fence or wall
  • The variety 'Invicta' is mildew-resistant and heavy cropping — ideal for beginners
