Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow in root trainers or small pots indoors from February to March.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to June. Successional sowing extends the harvest.

Harvest

Pick when pods are flat and the peas inside are barely visible — about 12 weeks from sowing. Eat the whole pod.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 5cm deep, 5-7cm apart in a flat-bottomed trench
  • Double rows 15-20cm apart work well
  • Provide pea sticks, netting, or a trellis for plants to climb — most varieties reach 1-1.5m
  • Water the drill before sowing
  • Protect from mice with fine mesh until seeds germinate

Plant Care

  • Support plants from early on — tendrils need something to grip
  • Water well once flowers appear and during dry spells
  • Pick every 2-3 days once pods start forming — regular picking keeps plants producing
  • Don't overfeed — peas fix their own nitrogen
  • Watch for pea moth and mildew in late season

AllotMe’s Tips

  • 'Oregon Sugar Pod' is the classic mangetout variety — tall, productive, and delicious
  • The more you pick, the more you get — check plants every other day
  • Mangetout are the sweetest when eaten raw straight from the plant — perfect for kids' gardens
