Sow Seeds Indoors

Sow in trays or modules indoors from February. Transplant out once large enough to handle.

Outdoors

Sow direct outdoors from March to September. Successional sowing every 2-3 weeks gives a constant supply.

Harvest

Pick individual leaves as a cut-and-come-again crop from about 4 weeks after sowing. Harvest before the leaves get too large and peppery.

How to Sow

  • Sow seeds thinly, 1cm deep in rows 15cm apart
  • Thin seedlings to 15cm apart or grow as a cut-and-come-again salad
  • Choose a partially shaded spot in summer to slow bolting
  • Water the drill well before sowing
  • Can be grown in pots, window boxes, and grow bags

Plant Care

  • Water regularly — dry conditions cause rocket to bolt quickly and become very peppery
  • Grow in partial shade during summer to slow bolting
  • Pick regularly to encourage fresh, tender new growth
  • If plants bolt, pull them up and sow a fresh batch
  • Cover with fleece in autumn and winter for extended harvesting

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Wild rocket has a stronger flavour and is slower to bolt than salad rocket — both are worth growing
  • Rocket is one of the quickest salad crops — from sowing to first harvest in as little as 4 weeks
  • Grow on a windowsill year-round for a constant supply of fresh peppery leaves
