How to Sow

  • Sow seeds 1-2cm deep in modules filled with seed compost
  • Transplant to final position when seedlings have 4-6 true leaves
  • Space plants 60cm apart in rows 60cm apart
  • Firm soil well around each plant — brassicas need solid anchorage
  • Choose a sunny, open position with fertile, well-drained soil

Plant Care

  • Net against pigeons and cabbage white butterflies immediately after planting
  • Water well during dry spells, especially after transplanting
  • Stake tall plants in exposed sites — they can reach 90cm
  • Check regularly for caterpillars and remove by hand
  • Earth up the stems in autumn for extra stability over winter

AllotMe’s Tips

  • Purple sprouting broccoli fills the 'hungry gap' (Feb-April) when little else is ready — it's invaluable on an allotment
  • 'Early Purple Sprouting' is the most reliable variety for UK growing
  • Once you cut the central head, the plant produces masses of smaller side shoots over 6-8 weeks — don't pull the plant up too soon!
